ISKME Study on Assessing Graduation Proficiencies and External Validation

At its November 2-4, 2011 meeting, the Commission decided to continue to study and receive comment from the region on the Redesign Steering Committee's recommendation that institutions will externally benchmark key graduation proficiencies as part of the redesigned Institutional Review Process. The intent of the recommendation was that external validation of the the graduation proficiencies would provide a more consistent approach to evaluating student learning.

WASC commissioned the Institute for the Study of Knowledge Management in Education (ISKME) to further study these issues. The paper they presented:

  • Illustrates the diversity of definitions and approaches surrounding the assessment and external validation of graduation proficiencies
  • Reviews case studies from the literature and highlights advantages and challenges involved in current proficiency assessment practices
  • Presents insights into current practices of WASC-accredited institutions
  • Provides recommendations regarding steps for WASC going forward Click here to read the full study.
