Siyavula

SiyavulaInforming an Emerging Model of OER Use, Localization, and Community Building for South African Teachers

Overview

Siyavula is a South African-based project that seeks to meet its country’s dearth in curriculum materials by offering freely available, open educational resources (OER) to teachers across all grades, subjects, and learning areas.

The project’s overreaching aim is to support teachers in finding and adapting resources that match their local teaching and learning needs, and in sharing knowledge about resource use and pedagogy through targeted professional development workshops and social networking tools that support teachers in building communities around Siyavula resources.

Our Approach

ISKME, as the researcher for this project, has been conducting research on Siyavula’s activities and those of its teacher users to increase understanding of factors that contribute to the creation, use and localization of OER within the South African teaching and learning context. In doing so, ISKME aims to inform the implementation of the Siyavula project and to contribute to an emerging model of professional development and social networking supports around open educational resource use, reuse and community building.
