In 2008, ISKME conducted an exploratory pilot study of the factors that contribute to a resource’s ability to “travel well”. We define travel well resources as resources that are localizable across multiple teaching and learning situations, including those for which they were not originally intended. The study consisted of two short surveys, administered in March and June of 2008, with college level biology instructors. All instructors had previously accessed and used OER, and all were interested in incorporating open content more into their teaching. For both surveys, instructors answered a set of open-ended and Likert scale questions about the resources to assess the factors that would impact their decision to select and use the resources in their teaching. After both surveys, a debrief session was held to obtain input on the survey design and to capture further insights on the issue of travel well. This document presents a summary of findings from this research, presented at iSummit 2008 in Sapporo, Japan.
